Plagiarism check for students

Ephorus

Scribbr uses the same Ephorus plagiarism software as hundreds of universities around the globe. Your document will be compared to billions of sources from the internet and scientific journal databases. The check will highlight similarities and help you understand plagiarism.

How does it work?

Start by uploading your document. Within 10 minutes, the Scribbr Plagiarism Check will send you an Originality Score that reflects the number of similarities found plus an indication of unoriginal content. You can then use these results to make sure you are treating your sources appropriately and using the correct referencing style as you rewrite your document.

Avoiding plagiarism

Plagiarism is taken very seriously in the academic world, as it’s a form of fraud. It’s therefore important that you both understand what it is and always properly acknowledge the work of others.

Popular questions about the Scribbr Plagiarism Check

Will I get a 100% match at my school when I use the Scribbr Plagiarism Check?

We understand this concern. However, since the Scribbr Plagiarism Check does not store any documents that it checks in the shared Ephorus database, it’s impossible for this to happen (even if your schools also uses Ephorus software).

As an added precaution, you can also personally delete your details and documents from Scribbr’s own server as soon as you’ve received the results of your Plagiarism Check.

Will the results be the same as the results of the check used at my school?

The results of the Scribbr Plagiarism Check will be 99% the same as the Ephorus check used at your school. The Scribbr Plagiarism Check  is optimized for students, which means that you will receive a detailed report with extra information to fix and prevent plagiarism.

Minor difference

Schools often have their own database of (prior) theses. Scribbr has no access to those databases. When you copy data from another thesis that is not publicly accessible, the Scribbr Plagiarism Check will neither be able to detect plagiarism nor identify the source of this data.

However, most theses are actually publicly accessible since many universities and schools have public databases. This means that the Scribbr Plagiarism Check is able to find these theses.

Will my document be published on a (public) database?

No, the Scribbr Plagiarism Check does not result in your document being published in any public database (unlike other plagiarism check services).

As soon as you’ve received the result from the Plagiarism Check, you can directly delete all details and documents from the Scribbr server.

How long does the Scribbr Plagiarism Check take?

The Scribbr Plagiarism Check takes about 10 minutes to finish. For documents larger than 35.000 words it can take a bit longer. As soon as the check has finished we will send you an e-mail.

What is plagiarism?

The Oxford English Dictionary (2014) defines plagiarism as “The practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own”. This applies to more than just using long quotations from a source; sometimes utilizing even a few key words may be considered plagiarism.

Quotes and paraphrasing

You can use other people’s ideas or content by quoting or paraphrasing the material. If you fail to do this correctly, you are committing plagiarism. Quoting involves copying text from a source verbatim and placing it within quotation marks; paraphrasing entails using your own words to describe a source text. An in-text citation is needed in either case.

Acknowledging your sources

Acknowledging the sources you have used is important. Your academic program will likely require you to follow a particular referencing style, such as APA (which is the most common style).

Helping you to properly cite someone else’s work

Using numerous sources is normal when writing a thesis. However, you then have a responsibility to cite them correctly to avoid plagiarism. This can be complicated and mistakes can easily be made. Our goal is to provide you with tools that will prevent you from plagiarizing and give you peace of mind that your thesis cites all sources appropriately.
